A to Z Food Challenge: N

Today's challenge quickly became a bit of daunting task for me. It's been really hot over here - it's supposed to be insanely hot the next couple of months, so I guess I might as well start sucking it up - and I really just wanted to stay home in front of the fan. Seeing as how I was getting hungry - I was feeding my son and forgot to eat myself AKA mom life - I pulled myself together and we headed to Trader Joe's.

Everything is from Trader Joe's. Yes I realize that most of the items I've done for this challenge are from Trader Joe's and not really recipes. Let me clarify something. I am NOT affiliated with Trader Joe's. I am NOT compensated for my purchases from Trader Joe's. I merely love Trader Joe's. I enjoy trying new items from there because not only are they tasty morsels, but healthy as well. Also, they tend to be rather cheap, which is absolutely fan-freaking-tastic.

Warning: I know that whenever I purchase something for these challenges, I always try to include the prices. However this time I will have to use estimates. I'm pretty sure of the prices, as they weren't necessarily difficult to remember, but somehow I misplaced my receipt.

This challenge is aimed more towards "snack time". I did include a noodle soup, which can easily be eaten as a meal, but I tend to eat this as a snack with the other items.

The first item is a package of Garlic Naan bread. I believe this was $1.99. I absolutely love how quickly these can be warmed up (preheat oven at 400 degrees F for about 10 minutes, then put the bread in the oven for about 2 minutes) and how tasty they are! You could easily pair them with any meal. An Indian dish, a delicious pasta, a creamy sauce, or some scrumptious hummus like we did! I also dip this bread in noodle soup - including the soup I will mention in a minute - and I can't even begin to tell you how amazing it is. I know you probably wouldn't think that "bread" would be something worthy of being included in a blog post, but it's the fact that it's filled with garlic (which is incredibly healthy) and can be used in replacement for chips with a dipping sauce, makes for a delicious - and ultra healthy - snack for the little ones! My son absolutely loves this snack and devours 2 pieces of Naan bread and half a container of hummus, in ONE sitting.

The particular hummus we buy - and bought today for this challenge to pair with our Naan bread - is Edamame Hummus, roughly $3.99. This particular hummus doesn't have a distinctly strong flavor, but does have a very light flavor. It can be made in a grilled cheese sandwich, with Naan bread - like I mentioned, or even as an alternative to pasta sauce! I know it sounds strange and it may not be for everyone, but I love it. Hummus is an amazing snack and my little one truly agrees!

The last "N" item for today is Garlic Noodle Soup, about 99 cents. Trader Joe's has a few packaged soup bowls - Garlic, Spring Onion, and Mushroom - but I am allergic to Mushroom and I love garlic, which is why it ended up in the grocery cart. This soup is extremely subtle and light. The flavor is not overpowering AT ALL and while it is garlic flavored, it isn't a "BAM" taste. I personally add Sriracha and pepper to mine, to give it a little bit more flavor. Personally I would've liked it to have a stronger broth and perhaps actual garlic pieces, but for 99 cents I can't complain (PS, you need to let the noodles sit for a few minutes to fully "cook"). The fact that it isn't nearly as bad as the traditional "cup of soups" you see in the store, I think that I can choke back the lack of flavor. Besides, "doctoring" it a little bit is extremely easy. I tend to buy these for when I'm not feeling well or on a cold day with LOADS of Sriracha. Other ways to add additional flavor, would be to add some vegetables, oregano, basil, spices, and/or meat. It's a really good "base" soup, but if you prefer light soups, this is the one for you!!!

That's all I have for you guys today. I know it's not a HUGE challenge, but it's really an awesome snack. Personally it's one of my favorites and my son's. With so many unhealthy options out there, sometimes it's nice to know of alternative options for when you're feeling snacky. If you miss you salsa, try the Naan bread with it! You'd be surprised how versatile these snacks can be!!!

Have an awesome weekend and I hope it's filled with scrumptious food and awesome memories! Just remember to stay safe and have fun!

OITNB vs Wentworth: Same Show or Just Similar???

WARNING!!! This post may include mild spoilers. No I won't be going into intimate details of either show and each specific characters, nor will I be discussing all of the characters "big scene's", but I will be talking about a few particular similarities that may give away some episodes/seasons. You have been warned.

If you are like many people around the world, you've become an addict to the hit Netflix series, Orange Is The New Black. It's a story about a woman named Piper Chapmen, who - because of her love interest at the time - has been placed into prison for drugs. She's hit with hard times, low times, sex times, and just down right UGLY times. Each character in the series has their own plot and story, that will pull at you heart strings like you've never imagined. SEASON 4 ANYONE???

With loads of drama, distinct character scenes, and a few "oh no she DIDN'T" moments, how can you not love OITNB? Granted there are quite a few sex scenes, but trust me people that isn't what they're going for. If you watch all the way through each season, you'll realize that all the stories fall way deeper into thick and twisted forests. I do think each season has gotten more intense - again, see Season 4.

Now let's talk about Wentworth. Wentworth is an Australian series that is based around an abused woman named Bea Smith, who's husband is LESS than a loving father and spouse. She tried to kill her husband, but quickly regretted the decision and saved him, only to be met with prison and a teenage daughter that rebels hardcore against her. As she goes into prison, she's met with reality that this is no "sweetheart" prison. You have "top dogs", shankings, love, murder, and of course insane criminals. You do get acquainted with specific characters, albeit not as many characters get a "backstory", but trust me heart strings will be played on as well. With the recent Season 4 airing their finale this past Tuesday, I began to realize that the similarities were far more common with OITNB, then I previously thought!

If you've read my prior post on Netflix shows to start binge-watching, you'd know that I mentioned Wentworth as an alternative to OITNB lovers, while we anxiously wait for new seasons. While at the time I knew certain things were different and some more have come to light for me.

A few examples would be as follows:

OITNB - Trans woman in prison / Wentworth - Trans woman in prison
OITNB - Cancer patient / Wentworth - Cancer patient
OITNB - Old enemy return to prison / Wentworth - Old enemy returned to prison
OITNB - Baby in prison / Wentworth - baby in prison

I don't want to go into too much detail, but I will say this. Holy macaroni! Yes I do realize that a lot of these issues can be construed as common happenings inside realistic prisons, but I do think it's a little funny to see certain plot lines become intertwined with similarities. Of course there are some that are just entirely too common in prison to not be mentioned in any show - drugs for example.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think these two shows are twins! Absolutely not! I think that OITNB has a lot of very powerful scenes to make you cry instantly, while still adding comedy to remove a lot of the "darkness" that could easily be construed - an excellent pairing I might add, while Wentworth is a LOT darker and serious. Comedy seems to come very, VERY seldom in this show, but I will say that the pain you'll feel for certain characters is very apparent. With the similarities I've mentioned, it could merely be a coincidental instance that happened to play on both shows.

The thing to keep you binge watching OITNB - in my opinion - is the basis for their plot lines and stories. Each series is very well mixed, giving us a little insight into each characters backgrounds, lives inside the prisons, and drama that truly does revolve around being locked up. It doesn't push our buttons, make us constantly think "that would NEVER happen!" or "are you kidding me right now?". It makes you laugh, cry, scream, and cheer for certain prisoners. Who would've thought you'd be cheering for criminals? This is probably why they've won a few awards, just saying.

The thing to keep you loving Wentworth - again, in my opinion - is the harsh reality that may - or may not - truly take place in a women's prison. The reality that these women can easily be pulled into a drug world, "ganged" because they are on the wrong side, or killed for loving someone, is very cold, but very intriguing. I know that probably sounds a little...weird, but trust me it's really interesting. Wentworth is based around Bea Smith and keeps almost all the stories circling her. There has been a few times where other prisoners have gotten mild lime-light, but it's only if they are solely directed with Bea in some serious way or another. For example, that trans woman in Wentworth? Bea's bestfriend/body guard. The trans woman in OITNB is solely a separate character, not really dealing with Piper. This is merely to point out that while they are similar, they are quite different.

Throughout my time watching these shows and seeing the stories dive into crazy antics and sad endings, I've grown to love them both in their own special ways. Regardless of how alike they may - or may not - be, I do think both deserve to be watched. I do think if you like OITNB, you should check out Wentworth, for a "rawer" version. But if you aren't necessarily into the idea of seeing what the harsher side of prison could truly emulate, then perhaps sticking to the "once a year" series would be best for you. Just saying.

Let me know what you guys think! Do you prefer one over the other or do they both hold a spot on your "Must Watch" list?

Weekly Thrift Store Finds!!!

I spend more time at Goodwill than I'd like to admit. 90% of my wardrobe is from Goodwill and believe you me, I am not ashamed one bit. You wouldn't believe how many amazing finds I've found for extremely cheap! Well, you would if you've seen my wardrobe post (see HERE) or thrift store post (see HERE). The way I keep my mild obsession going full throttle, is by selling old clothes that I've grown tiresome with and using ONLY that money to indulge my Goodwill shopping trips. I have to say, I've been extremely successful doing this trick, because majority of the time I sell the clothes for a few dollars more than what I've spent on them. I do this with furniture as well, purely for Goodwill trips. So far, so good.

Well, this week wasn't any different. Except of course for the clothing selection. I swear, I think someone threw out at least 30 pairs of "Lucky Brand" jeans! I was shocked seeing as how some can run as much as $100!!! Including the pair that I purchased for myself!

I sold 2 of my old jeans from Forever 21, because unfortunately they just weren't holding up to my standards. They didn't fit correctly, so I gave up trying to squeeze into them. Granted I don't really wear jeans too often, but I'd like them to fit when I do. I purchased the jeans for only $7 a piece and sold them for $10 each. May only be a $6 profit total, but trust me with thrift store shopping, $6 can mean 2 shirts! Which it did for me.

After selling my 2 pairs of jeans, I decided I was going to need a trip to Goodwill, because I was left with only 1 pair of dark jeans. Someone threw out a china cabinet with glass shelves, in really good condition. Lights included! So I picked it up, took it home, disinfected it, and sold it for $75!!! That was plenty to have a good day at Goodwill! Of course I didn't spend that much - the rest is going for my son to get new sandals and movie night for us, with money still left over.

With my $20 from selling my old jeans and the $75 from the china cabinet, I headed to Goodwill with a mission.

My first find was a pair of beautiful pants from "Lucky Brand". They fit excellent in the waist and was a little loose - the comfortable kind of loose - everywhere else. That was the "fit" they were meant to be. Excellent in my book. They were comfy, fit well, and were a really nice wash. I looked online and found the exact same jeans going for over $100, only $15 at Goodwill and in amazing condition! Almost like new! You better believe I scooped them up so quick. I browsed through the other "Lucky Brand" jeans, but I chose to not purchase anymore for that price, as I wanted to try and save a bit more. I ended up finding a pair of jeans of really good quality and fit beyond belief! They were fit everywhere and made my butt look good! Let's be realistic, who doesn't want their jeans to make their butt look good? Am I right?! Better than my butt looking fantastic, they were only $5. So in my shopping cart they went.

My other 3 purchases were all shirts. Ironically 3 different shades of blue. Not intentional, but all loved. One was even a brand of Forever 21, all were $3. Enough 3's?

One is almost a steel blue with a blouse type material in the front, but cotton in the back. The sleeves were so cute that I couldn't resist. The second one resembles a sapphire blue and is that blouse material all over. It has a small black zipper on the back at the top. The third one is a midnight blue shirt with "off-white" stripes and designs. To me it reminded me of a summery sailor shirt and the fact that it had shoulder pads just tickled me pink. Yes I enjoy a good shoulder pad.

All three are very light weight and work perfectly dressed up with a skirt, nice pants, or shorts. They can also be casual with jeans or jean shorts. It's awesome to find shirts that I can get multi-use out of. I know that these clothes may look a little...weird on the hangers, but trust me they are very flattering when worn.

The pants for me were an absolute must for me, but the shirts were mini "splurges". With a total of $29, I was more than pleased with my buys! I did leave a few things behind that weren't necessary - an antique soup bowl, a windbreaker, and a purse - but I don't regret it one bit. With the extra funds left, my son and I are going to plan for a movie date to see "Finding Dory". The tickets will only cost us $12 total, so the left over money will be used as "good boy money" for when my son does his chores.

Yes, he works for his toys. If it isn't his birthday or Christmas, I don't think it's needed. So, he does chores, saves up, and makes his own decisions.

Overall I'm in love with today's finds and I couldn't be happier. I still can't believe I found a pair of "Lucky Brand" jeans for $15!!! And they're comfortable?! Say WHAT?!

It just goes to show, you don't have to go retail to find beautiful clothes. Besides, shopping at Goodwill means you're doing your part to recycle! Honestly, I haven't shopped retail for myself in almost 5 years and my only regret is not doing it sooner! I have even found BRAND NEW shirts for my son, WITH tags. I do buy my son clothes retail, only because the Goodwill close to us seems to have very limited kids clothes, but I'm not complaining.

I'm in love with Goodwill and I'll never stop!!!!

I Tried 3 Dating Apps and I'm Still Single.

I've been single for almost 6 years now and I can honestly say that while most of it has been beneficial to my "self discovery" journey - I got completely sober from alcohol when I got pregnant which led me to realize who I really am - I have had moments of loneliness. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love being a single mom to my little Padawan, but I do miss having an adult to talk to and watch Netflix with. Seeing as how everything is done online these days, I decided to venture into the online world of dating.

Now, I'm not the most enthusiastic when it comes to dating online. Too many variables that can go wrong and too much anxiety to deal with. But despite my better judgment, I thought I'd give it a whirl. To be perfectly clear though, I already chose a place to meet potentials in case it actually got that far. The place? A busy restaurant, during the day, where there is valet parking, and ton's of people around every corner.

Found HERE
I'm not going to mention the 3 apps I tried, because they are not up for debate today. Let's just say they are popular, well-known, sites that were 100% free. Sorry, I'd rather pay for a pizza then pay for a dating website. After using these apps for exactly 1 week, I'm happy to announce I'm still single. That's right I said H-A-P-P-Y!!! Oh, you want to know why I'm so freaking glad that it didn't turn out well for me? Sure, let's break it all down.

After experiencing awkward opening lines, painfully straight-forward men, and a few rude remarks, I realized that I am absolutely stoked that I don't have to deal with ANY of them as partners. I get to eat the chocolate of my choosing on Valentine's day, I don't have to worry about buying any of them Christmas presents, and I can be in my Spongebob pajama's all day with psycho hair and no makeup on, if I want to.

To give you guys further explanation on why this single momma is still single, here's a list I've compiled for you all, based on what happened to me. Warning, it all happened. Yay.

1. I'm not a hookup.
2. I don't want to meet your entire family for the first date.
3. Some vegans can be VERY mean if you eat meat.
4. I don't feel like watching documentaries about fish - Nemo will do.
5. Apparently shopping at thrift stores is shunned upon.
6. Oysters and I don't mix, especially in an eating contest.
7. Bathroom pics came WAY to frequently with WAY too few clothes.
8. My love for Star Wars is not up for debate.
9. No, I won't go to Bora Bora with you this weekend.
10. I think I'll keep my Social Security Number, thanks.
11. Animals are adorable, you ARE NOT.
12. I'm down for silliness, but if you're dressed as a baby...for your office party...yea...
13. If you can't smile, I can't hang with you.
14. No I'm not sure what my tattoos will be like when I'm 90 and no I don't care.
15. I really don't want to see your dermatologist cut off your wart tomorrow.
16. No I don't think abortion is "good enough" birth control...ass.
17. Sorry string bikini's and I don't mix EVER.
18. I am not a therapist.
19. If you can't go to Disneyland, we are SO not meeting up.
20. My parenting is not for anyone else to decide.
21. No I don't think my place is in the kitchen.
22. Yes I love to eat food and no I won't go on a diet.
23. I'm all down for exercise, but ONLY hanging out at the gym isn't my idea of "fun".
24. Yes I fart.
25. I'm not going to join anyone's "swing party".
26. I have never met a celebrity....sorry?
27. Why yes, I DO play toys still...HELLO?! Does the word MOM meaning anything?!
28. No I don't want you - or anyone - to be my son's dad.
29. Umm...I don't like foot rubs, let alone soaking them in pudding and rubbing them on you.
30. I don't think video games are only for men....

Found on Pinterest
And there you have it. Real life scenarios I had to deal with while using these apps. Granted they weren't all horrendous men. Some were looking for friendships, some never answered, and some were just....boring. I do think that there is probably gentlemen all over those dating sites, but I was unfortunate enough to not deal with any of them.

I have to say, I'm not terribly disappointed coming out of this ordeal single. Like I mentioned before, there are MANY reasons why the single life is a good life. A few more would be, I don't have to share my midnight pizza, I don't have to "discuss" what to watch on Netflix, and I don't have to worry about sharing the bed with anyone other than a tiny little munchkin. Although, my son does take up just as much space...

I'm not "anti-relationships", I'm just happy with what I have right now. I know - or at least I think - that someday I'll find someone worth the sacrifices, but at this moment in my life, I'm perfectly content with how my love life is going. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to make some chocolate milk, watch a few episodes of "Murder She Wrote", and spread out on the couch in comfort!

Food Rings!!!

If you've seen my Instagram photo from this weekend, then you may have an idea on what today's blog post is about. If you haven't then don't worry, I'll explain - and show you - what I'm talking about!

As I've mentioned before, I am certainly into arts and crafts. For calming my nerves, killing the time late at night - insomnia sucks, in case you were unaware - and of course to practice art. It puts me in a sense of tranquility that I hardly find anywhere else. Since the past week had been a little rough on my emotions, my insomnia was beginning to slowly get worse. So I decided to whip out my pile of Sculpey's clay and paint to create something I thought would be unique.

It's not surprised I absolutely LOVE food. Not only is it needed to survive, but it's freaking delicious. Well, some of it. So to commemorate my love of food and love of unique jewelry pieces, I thought I'd create some rings that have a few of my favorite foods on them.

One reason I love food, is the memories I have around them. I know it sounds like the beginning of a bad eating habit, but hear me out. When I was little, I'd spend all day with my Abuelita to cook Christmas dinner, then everyone would gather around and just be with each other. I grew up having wonderful conversations and fun times around kitchen tables. From frosting numerous birthday cakes to playing games at the buffet table. I try to instill that same amount of happy times with my son at our kitchen table.

Besides the whole "memory lane" story, who doesn't like miniature food?! It's hilarious and adorable. Seeing as how I really REALLY love the idea of displaying tiny plates of my favorite foods, I decided to create a miniature collection of miniature food dishes! I have only created a handful - some aren't pictured because they haven't been painted or "cooked" in the oven yet - but I truly admire the ones I have completely finished. Also, a few that I've created and don't have photographed, are the ones I've  given away to close friends/family.

Now, I don't have any recent plans to sell them - I've been asked if I was going to - but I have been thinking about creating a giveaway for some of them. Perhaps a contest of some sort? I'm not exactly sure, because I don't know if anyone would be genuinely interested.

I've been wanting to create more and more plates - granted they aren't perfect, but I am just starting out with minimal tools - but I need some ideas. So far I've created 7 plates:

- Salmon topped with mango, tomatoes, onions, and cilantro, with a small lime wedge, and a side of rice. (not pictured/not finished)

-  Tacos topped guacamole and salsa fresca, with a side of Mexican rice, refried beans and cotija cheese, and horchata with ice. (pictured)

- Donuts with coffee (pictured)

- Burrito with enchilada sauce on top, with a side of Mexican rice and refried beans, paired with a cup of horchata. (not pictured/given away)

- A funnel cake topped with powder sugar and strawberries (not pictured/given away)

- ABC soup with a spoon like my Abuela used to make me , some tortilla chips, and a banana smoothie. (pictured)

- Churros with powder sugar, a side of ice-cream in a bowl with a spoon topped with chocolate syrup, and a side of Abuelita Hot Chocolate. (pictured)

To be perfectly honest, I love taking the time to create these. Whether or not I sell them is up for debate. As far as the contest goes, stay tuned because there is a possibility of it becoming a reality. All I need is a little feedback.

Would you guys be interested in participating in a contest/giveaway for a personalized or pre-made food ring? Do you guys have any ideas on future food plates?

If I don't do anything further than simply make these for fun, I won't be disappointed as it's really fun for me. I absolutely love creating these little beauties, regardless of it's imperfections. To me, it's a way for me to self express the glorious moments that can take part if we just put down the technology, gather around a table, and enjoy some delicious food.

So what do you guys think? Contest? No contest? Keep them to myself? Let me know what you think! Here, my email, my Instagram, or my Twitter! All I need is a little word of advice from all my fellow followers!

Hope you guys had an awesome weekend and a wonderful Monday! I know they can be a little bit frustrating, but trust me it can ALWAYS be worse!!!

A to Z Food Challenge : M

Today I bring to you the food that I eat on a consistent basis. A particular food group that I would happily be stranded on a deserted island with. The food that forces me to exercise in order to keep up with the amount of protein I consume. I'm talking about meat.

I find myself in torrential dilemmas every time I'm at the grocery store, because I struggle to decide what meat to consume for the day. Chicken, pork, beef, fish, SO MANY CHOICES! All delicious, but equally frustrating. Not only do I have to choose which type of meat will make it to the dinner table, but also which cut of that meat. Today's choice, steak. Rib eye to be exact, priced at $8.49 (I goofed and forgot to see how much they were priced per pound, but this was how much I paid for my chunk), paired with corn and homemade mashed potatoes (Gold Potatoes are our favorite).

First of all, before I begin my mini review, I would like to discuss beef cuts. Porterhouse are the best of the best, seeing as how they are tender and technically two cuts of meat in one. Flank steak however can be rather dry, seeing as how the marbled fat content isn't really apparent. For us, my son will not eat a tough steak - he's definitely my kid -  but I didn't feel like shoveling out $28 a steak for tonight's meal. So I with a little help from a Trader Joe's employee, I went with the Rib Eye as it tends to be a little more tender to my son's preference. Picky eaters, am I right?

I chose to simply use salt, oil, and Grill Mates 'Montreal Steak' seasoning. I also decided to cook the steaks using a cast iron, as it was WAY to freaking hot outside to fire up the grill. Sorry, but standing in the scorching sun cooking meat doesn't sound like a fun time to me. While the steaks were cooking, I boiled some potatoes with corn and began to taste test a few other items I found today while on my grocery adventure.

Side Note: If you're looking for a quick and easy meal for the kiddo's, I highly recommend these party size mini meatballs from Trader Joe's - $4.79. My son absolutely loves them, which makes them a constant re-buy for us! To be honest, anyone could enjoy these. With spaghetti, BBQ sauce, ketchup, you name it.

The first new product I decided to pick up, is called "Lattemiele Milk and Honey cookies". I absolutely love my nighttime tea - I say nighttime, because I can't bare to drink hot tea in this heat - so when I find a small snack that I could nicely pair with my tea, I go for it. These cookies come in small packs, which I absolutely love because I won't have to worry about them all going bad at once, and taste like a subtle heaven. They remind me of a vanilla wafer, but less sweet. These cookies definitely have a taste of honey and with tea they are amazing. I find them to be the perfect late night snack that won't stuff you. These "Milk and Honey cookies" are $2.49 and well worth it.

Another newbie for today's challenge, is Trader Joe's new "Melon Juice" made from honeydew melons. Now I know my son is NOT a fan of honeydew, so testing this drink with him was not an option. However, I absolutely love honeydew so I jumped on this like flies on honey. To me it tastes like watermelon and cantaloupe. I find this to be a refreshing beverage that you can't just sit and sip. I've chugged 3 glasses of these today, because of the heat and I felt so rejuvenated. I'm hoping this product doesn't leave the shelves anytime soon, because I will be buying and re-buying!!!

The last item for today's challenge, is Trader Joe's "Milk Chocolate Candy Coated Drops" - $2.99. These are EXACTLY like M&M's. From the crunchy outer coating to the melting chocolate inside's, they will have you wanting handfuls. I do feel as if they are bit bigger than the original M&M's - which is a bonus for me - and they're is something about them that makes me want these more than actual M&M's. While the similarities are crazy, they do have differences. One being the size, but the other being that the outer shell seems to be less "manufactured". I know that doesn't make a ton of sense, but it just tastes like authentic hardened chocolate. That's not to say that M&M's is all fake. The Trader Joe's chocolate drops are just better. For example, a standard M&M would melt from the inside out, these melt all together, making me believe that I truly am tasting a difference. These will be definitely be a re-buy for us! My son even said they tasted better than M&M's and M&M's used to be his favorite!

Overall I think today was a delicious day of amazing finds. Everything is re-buys and my son thoroughly enjoyed our Friday night feast.

This week has been a rough week for me mentally, emotionally, and physically. I haven't had much rest and I can feel the toll it's taking on my body. I'm truly hoping to catch up on some rest tonight and be back on my "A game" next week. Until then, have a wonderful weekend guys and I will talk to you guys again on Monday! Love you all and stay safe.

A Burger Worth Devouring!!!

Today was an emotionally rough day for me. It's the one year anniversary of my beloved Grandmother's death. Someone who I hold near and dear to my heart. Today we decided to commemorate her life at the Ocean Beach pier and then my uncle, son, and I headed out to a nice linner. We wanted to sit down somewhere and enjoy some good food, just as my Grandmother would've done. In light of trying to make today a joyous one, I also decided to include a review for a restaurant I think deserves some additional notice. I'm talking about 'Lazy Dog'.

I've eaten here quite a few times and have had the pleasure of tasting a few items from their menu, but there are two items that are worth a specific shout-out. Two items that I almost always order, because they are just that good.

First is the Baja California Burger. This burger is topped with guacamole, tomato, pickle, red
onion, hatch chiles, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, and jalapeno-lime aioli sauce on a brioche-style bun. It also comes with a side of fries, which I always order as "cajun". I can't even begin to describe the juicy goodness that comes from this particular burger. Not only do you get quality, you get quantity! It's so big, you will absolutely have a handful of goodness melt in your hands after every bite. I know that most people won't exactly think this is "lady like" - this is definitely NOT a burger for trying to look "cute" - but you will end up covered in saucy goodness once you've completed the euphoric eating journey with the Baja California Burger. It's extremely well proportionate and all the toppings compliment each other exquisitely. I've taken a few friends along with my uncle here to try this burger and all of them have raved about their "new favorite burgers". Trust me, this is something you HAVE to experience!!!

The second item is a drink and while a drink may not be so extravagant to have it's own article on a blog, this time I think it is. My particular drink is called 'Jamaican Lemonade'. It consists of coconut milk, lime, orange juice, pineapple juice, palm juice, and sweet & sour. It has a taste of fruity sourness that you'd find in a refreshingly tropical drink. With this beverage, you won't be able to just "try it", you'll have to buy it! It's an amazing drink for the Baja Burger as well, seeing as how the fruit tends to pair amazingly with spicy meat. Or at least that's my opinion.

When it comes to atmosphere, you'll find yourself in a very relaxing building, decorated with dog decor and a rustic modern vibe. It has a beautiful bar set up, but it's not a rowdy restaurant with disorderly conduct in every corner. You have a separate dinning area - not separated by walls, but merely tables - and I do feel as if the flow throughout the restaurant is an extremely functional one. It isn't "fine dining", but it certainly isn't a pajama diner either. You could eat with a date or have a family outing, either way you'll have a deliciously fun time.

Have little furry friends? Don't worry, you're precious paw puppies can feast with you outside next to a fire pit or under a space heater, with an equally amazing dining experience.

Pricing wise, I absolutely can't complain. For my uncle, son, and I to eat 3 amazing meals and 3 amazing drinks, we paid less than $40! That is a deal in my eyes when it comes to eating well at a restaurant! That includes 2 huge burgers, 2 fries, 2 'Jamaican Lemonades', a bowl of Mac n' Cheese, 1 regular lemonade, and a side of sliced apples. Now tell me the price wasn't worth it!

The service was also fantastic, from the hostess to the very attentive waiter named Matt. He made sure we were well taken care of, without being overwhelmingly intrusive.

This restaurant has stuck around a while here in Mission Valley and I don't think it will be leaving anytime soon. With the business I constantly see and the quality it consistently provides, I don't see how it could possibly go under.

So the next time you're up for a really good burger - or any of their delicious items - but you don't want to go to a fast food - or fine dining - eatery, check out 'Lazy Dog'! Trust me, you'll be thankful you did!!!

How to make ANY pair of jeans fit like a gem!!!

First of all, I am not a professional seamstress. I am not amazingly descriptive. I do try my best and I know what I've personally attempted, therefore I now what works for me. I also do add pictures to try and help you guys out the best I can. With all this being said, here is my simple tutorial on how to make any pair of jeans fit like a gem!

Do you ever find yourself struggling to find a good pair of jeans that actually fit your waist, hips, and thighs, without spending a fortune? Trust me you're not alone. I too tend to spend way more time than needed to find a scent pair of pants that won't give me a muffin top or a back gap. After giving up jeans/pants all together and using leggings as the basis for my wardrobe, I've decided to figure out how to alter Goodwill jeans to be a perfect fit. I've finally figured it out.

There are quite a few tips on the Internet - mostly Pinterest - that give you an edge in the Jean world, but I'm here to explain my easy tip that worked exquisite for me.

First you'll need a pair of pants that fit everywhere, except your waist. Make sure they aren't expensive pants that you'll be upset about being cut up (and possibly ruined as this can take a little trial and error). Fortunately it only took me one try, but that was because I knew to cut short. Remember, you can always take off more, you can't add it back on.

You'll also need a few safety pins, a marker, some thread, a needle, and a pair of trusty scissors.

Put your future lovelies on and taunt them in a way that they actually fit. Squeeze each side of your jeans to create a snug fit - not too tight -  and make marks on the inside of the jeans with your marker, to show where the jeans should be sewn together. Keep in place using safety pins. Try to have the "pinched" sections end up close to the outer seam. It will be a lot less noticeable than if you were to sew a line in a completely different area.

Proceed to sew OUTSIDE of the lines, to give a bit added room. Try the jeans BEFORE you cut off the extra fabric, to double check that you've gotten the correct fit. If you feel it's too tight, you can always rip out the stitches carefully and re-sew. You don't necessarily need to use a sewing machine. I did this by hand.

Once you've become satisfied with the fit, simply cut off any extra fabric. You may notice that you have a tiny little "point" on the side of your pants, but this can easily be fixed. Simply put on your jeans, fold the point in, up, and under where you sewed your pinched section (I'm sorry if my description isn't that accurate. Hopefully the photos will help) and sew a small knot to secure on the inside. This will "tuck" the point into the inside, giving you a very small section that no longer requires any additional altering.

This entire procedure is really a way for you to alter your jeans in a fashion that will suit your body best. Unfortunately not every company understands that not every body type is perfect or similar. This will give you a bit more freedom.

With everything tightly sewn together, you really can't tell a huge difference. Especially when you wear a shirt over the top section of your jeans. Even if you tuck in your shirt, it isn't noticeable. If someone happens to mention it - and they aren't your significant other or kids - tell them they are WAY to close.

For me this ended up being an awesome trick that I literally use for all my jeans now. I don't like "hip-huggers", but I don't necessarily go for "high wasted" either. I simply go for what's most comfortable and fits the best. The wonderful part about this easy fix is that now I don't have to pass up on a gorgeous pair of cheap thrift jeans, just because of a minor problem that can now be easily fixed!

I gotta say, these pants in particular have become my new favorite - and extremely comfortable - pair of jeans! Who knows, maybe I'll actually add a few more pairs to my VERY small collection!

So go out there and rock those pants, because you can TOTALLY fit in them now!!!

Pokemon Go: Dream Come True or Virtual Nightmare?

I am a 90's child. I grew up collecting Pokemon cards, putting in countless hours of game time into my Gameboy's, and becoming an all out addict to the creatures of Pokemon world. So when this game came out, I was determined to figure out if this was my wish upon a star. A little late, but better late than never right?

The first day that the game "Pokemon Go" released, I refrained from taking the plunge. I figured that due to this being a huge craze around the world, I was most likely going to be ridden with frustration from an overwhelmed server. I decided to wait until 2 days ago. The first attempt to download the game wasn't quite pleasurable. In fact, it didn't load at all. I got to the point of "sign in with Google" and then it crashed...and crashed and crashed and crashed. I was overwhelmingly upset that I just gave up. I tried to compose myself, delete the app, and try again later.

Fast forward to today. My son was asking if we could try adding "Pokemon Go" to our walks. I figured that if it wasn't a huge issue, as it was merely and add-on to what we already do. I knew what had happened on Sunday, but I wanted to give the app the benefit of the doubt. I loaded up the app store, downloaded the game, and tried to give this whole experience another shot. We got to create a character, catch our first 2 Pokemon, and go for a short walk while using the app. Then all hell broke loose. We found a "Ponyta" and caught it with one swift swipe of the Pokeball, then it crashed. I attempted to start it up again to absolutely no avail. It refused to work or load regardless of WiFi or cellular data. I deleted the app and thought maybe it was because my phone itself needed to be updated. I proceeded to backup my photos and contacts, empty our everything unnecessary on my phone, update to the newest version of iOS (I have an iPhone), and re-download the "Pokemon Go" app. Surely this would fix the issues right? Nope. We were able to get it to work for a few minutes and decided to head to the San Diego Zoo for "Nighttime Zoo" and try to see what Pokemon - if any - would be lurking around. We got to the Zoo, walked into the park, pulled out my phone, clicked on the app, and were left with disappointment. It wouldn't come up. It was perpetually "stuck" on the "loading" screen and we were never able to use it.

Seeing as how we were there more for the experience of the "Nighttime Zoo", we didn't allow it to upset us too much. We were able to watch 2 shows, see some active Koala's, check out the gorgeous Giraffe's and gawk at a beautiful Tortoise. We didn't see all the animals - we are members so it wasn't a necessity for us - but we were happy nonetheless.

Once we were home, I called it quits and deleted "Pokemon Go". I was a little saddened and even tried to research why I was struggling so much - I found out that supposedly you're supposed to have an iPhone 5 or newer to enjoy it and I have an iPhone 4s - but in the end I actually do think it's an app that deserves a download.

With the time we did have with the app, we actually found it to be fun. My son would be hunting for the Pokemon, which made him want to walk more than normal. I didn't want him to push himself too much, but we enjoyed searching together. We felt as if it was another genuine adventure we could bond over. I do think however, that it's something to be careful with. I've seen some people become quite careless over their movements and leave themselves rather exposed to some potential risks. A young boy wasn't even weary of cars, when he ran across the street iPhone up, to catch a Pokemon lurking across the street. I've also seen some people trespass into gated communities, to complete a catch. Yes it's addicting and can be quite exhilarating to live a fantasy many of us have only dreamed of, but I don't think the degree some take it too is safe. As the intro says, stay safe and be aware of your surroundings!

I don't know if the whole "iPhone 5 or newer" thing holds true, but seeing as how I was having an absolutely impossible time with the app, it could very well be accurate. I do intend on asking some of my other friends who also have an iPhone 4s. I don't intend on getting a new phone anytime soon, which makes this wish a bit of a dud for me personally, but all in all it's an amazing opportunity for this generation to live in the world of us 90's kids.

PS I tried downloading this app onto my iPad mini, but it still crashed. I did the update to the software as well to absolutely no avail. I wish this app would work, but for now I will simply look at my card collection and play my Gameboy.

Racism through these eyes.

Found HERE
For some time now the world has shown an overabundance of racial hate in rapid progression. Slurs being thrown about as if they are merely "hello's". Killings displayed all over our screen's as if it's as common as the daily weather, only because of "difference". For generations we've struggled intermittently with the bias some have towards others. With favoritism of race running rampant in a wide variety of jurisdictions, not just police stations. With this in mind, I have to admit that I feel as if I am truly privileged.

I am a Caucasian woman to many who see me walk with no words. I am half Mexican and half Caucasian to those who understand. I do not display either race in a prominent style using clothing or makeup, as a way that many do unknowingly or viciously. I do not fall under either category through the eyes of some of each race. I am a "white washed little girl" to a few who's culture I adore. I am a "dirty migrant disgrace" to a few whom I resemble most. My skin "defines" me to a degree with those who are blessed with sight, but my skin does not define me with those who are blessed with a heart.

I do not depict the "average" victim of racism, but that does not mean the words don't run cold through my veins. I do not play "the role" of someone who's been verbally abused for their "inconvenient" skin color. I do not seem like the person who would have personal experience with racism to a degree of pure sorrow, but in fact I have and I am.

They say family does not always mean blood, but I will say that family does mean respect regardless of situation. I stand with those who deserve respect and honor, regardless of acquaintance, for your blood and soul deserve it just as you are. I - unfortunately - haven't always found that this runs true to everyone, even those I've known personally for 25 years.

Today I was given the opportunity to experience first hand what it felt like to be truly judged as a whole person with multiple races, by someone who understood. I was shown the cruel reality that is settling in our nations soul, in fact the worlds. I was told that because I am of Mexican decent, I run the blood of a thief. Someone who is vial and a user, when in reality it was I who was used. I stood with someone whose heart was ripped out by an untimely death that deeply affected my inner being as well. I gave my own peace of mind in an attempt to help those as meaningfully as possible. I did as the one whose demise left me internally paralyzed, would have. Due to my race, this meant nothing. This purely meant convenience for someone who saw me as just that. Now that my help is no longer of necessity, I am not worthy.

I can not say I experience this hatred every waking moment or in depth as those who are currently in putrid war truly have. I can not say that I am one to watch a family member be persecuted because the sun shines differently upon their flesh. I can not say that my color defines every action I do with a misrepresentation. I can say that this isn't my first time with a pile of words running cold throughout me, due to the racist statement.

I've watched this world tear apart at those who have merely been brought to this earth as everyone else. I understand that the mentality is vastly different due to demographics and ancestry, but what I don't understand is why they choose to forgo the pain they have suffered themselves. I know evil is in humanity, but humanity is not evil.

White does not define a racist, just as a black does not define a criminal. Actions speak louder than words, so when we see a human determined to fight for their rights peacefully, perhaps we should look within ourselves to depict the correct determination of those persons.

Racism feels like you are alone. Like you are someone who has a worth far less than those who call upon you as trash. Something disposable. As if you aren't a human, but property. You begin to fuel hatred and fear, for your offspring may someday feel this within themselves. Racism is the action of hatred, something that is taught. To see racism is an attribute that we should truly strive to end in every corner. To experience racism is to momentarily pause our actions, but eventually push us to the brink of power. Power to end hate and spread the knowledge of humanity.

My personal venture into ending this monstrosity is something that can not be taught nor can it described. It's something silent, but powerful. Something I will forever continue to give and give, until my blood has stopped cold. I may not speak often of my commitments nor will I begin to defend my actions to my choices. I can say is that it's peaceful, quiet, and last's forever. I will spread love and acceptance will a strong force that can't be represented on the television. I do stand instead of sit and I surely don't write this without clear action.

Racism burns in every region, not just one continent or country. We struggle together, therefore we can strive together.

Regardless our tones, we are not crayons. We are not symbols. We are not skin. We are blood, bones, and soul. We are the human race, just as the dictionary defines it. So to define it differently is to go against the only definition. Human beings.
