A to Z Food Challenge: W

I have found a brand new love at Trader Joe's and I can't believe it's taken me this long to find it. Thankfully this challenge brought my new finds to light and I can't wait to share with you all! Granted many of you may have tried these already, but in case you're like me and just never truly paid attention, I'm happy to shed some light on a food that you NEED  in your life.

Wraps. That's right, wraps. Trader Joe's sells a wide variety of pre-made wraps. From vegan to meat lovers, Italian to Tuna, there is something for everyone.

Now, I'm not a huge fan of wraps. I never have been. I just didn't like cold tortillas filled with cold meat and cold veggies. When I think of a tortilla, I think of freshly made tortillas filled with meat and other deliciousness, all hot. Since I had to find something for "W" this week, I started to browse Trader Joe's with something that would suffice for today's challenge. I saw their stock of wraps, debated for a good while, and finally decided to taste a few of them.

My son really wanted to try one of them with me, so I had him try a Turkey, Spinach, and Swiss cheese wrap (I tried some of his too). I purchased an Italian Style Wrap, with ham, salami, sopressata, and provolone cheese. Both came with a price of $3.99 and mine came with an optional sauce - dijon mayonnaise.

The Turkey, Spinach, and Swiss wrap was in a herb and garlic tortilla. It also had tomato inside, which I had to take out or else my son wouldn't eat it, but the entire combination was really refreshing. I know it's a very simple style wrap - similar to a simple turkey sandwich - but everything tasted extremely fresh and rich. The turkey was juicy and not seasoned at all - which can be great for those with sensitive taste buds like my little guy - but it was still extremely flavorful. The spinach held it's crunch, regardless of being in a pre-made wrap. The tomato was also very juicy and fresh - I ate it after taking it out of my son's wraps. The cheese was the best part in my opinion. It had a honey dijon mustard already inside the wrap, but to be honest it was so light that you can barely taste it. The mustard did give a nice flavor though and didn't alter the wrap poorly at all, which is awesome, because normally my son and I despise honey dijon.

My wrap - the Italian Style Wrap - was my favorite out of the two and was the moment I realized I had been missing out. This wrap was amazing. Everything - just like my son's - was fresh and juicy. The entire wrap had this amazing combination and literally made me feel like I had ordered it moments earlier from a restaurant. It included lettuce and peppers along with all the other deliciousness - cheese, ham, and salami - but I add the dijon mayonnaise. I did taste the mayo and it was a hard no from me. It was so incredibly powerful, I was NOT a fan. The wrap was a wheat tortilla - normally not my favorite - but this was a really nice touch. There was something about this wrap that made me so freaking happy and healthy. With the creamy, rich cheese and the double meat, I was a really happy momma.

Extra tip: These wraps - like almost all other foods - taste even better with Sriracha! They taste amazing by themselves as well.

Both wraps were a hit and extremely filling. We ate one half of our sandwich each and we were left completely stuffed. The other thing I really appreciated by these wraps, was that while they weren't extremely huge, they sufficed our hunger. The wraps also make an excellent "on-the-go" lunch. Plus, you'll actually be eating healthy without feeling like your licking a pile of dirt covered lettuce - no offense to anyone who enjoys the "raw foods diet", I just can't do it.

After eating what I felt was a really nice lunch, we had to have a special treat. Luckily I found a really cool find, that happens to be a new item!

They're called "Pinks and Whites". They are shortbread cookies in the shape of little flowers, covered with yogurt and sprinkles, selling for just $2.99 a box. You know those beloved animal crackers that are pink and white - hint hint. The one's you've love since you were little and begged your parents to buy in bulk, because there was never enough sweet cookies? They're better.... That's right! They. Are. BETTER.

I started chuckling to myself when I saw these on the shelves, because I was just telling my padawan how I wished Trader Joe's would make their own version. Well guess freaking what, my wishes have been granted. They are creamy, rich, sweet, and amazing. It's like the Joe-Joe's vs Oreo's all over again! (see that post HERE). Even my son said they tasted better and for a 5 year old to agree, that's saying something.

These pink and white beauties perfectly pair with ice-cream or a glass of milk. Not only are they creamy and scrumptious, but they are going to be the death of me. I'm completely obsessed with them and I just can't get enough. So much so that I've had to buy a box for my son to enjoy after his dinners and a separate box for me, because I keep "sneaking" them after he goes to sleep.

Words don't describe these foods excellence - especially the cookies. All I can say is, if you haven't tried the wraps or the cookies, GO BUY THEM NOW!!! Warning, if you go to a Trader Joe's and they are all sold out of the cookies, all I have to say is I'm sorry. I can't help myself and I have purchased more than I need, but that doesn't mean I don't want them.

Well there you have it guys, two awesome finds that I totally recommend 100%. I know most of these challenges are consisting of Trader Joe's items, but I just can't help myself. There's just so many goodies to try and tell you guys about!!!!

Happy Friday everyone and I hope you have an absolutely wonderful weekend. I'd also like to say THANK YOU for all of your guys' support! I just hit 1,000 followers on Instagram and I started freaking out with joy. I seriously want to hug each and every one of you guys and say thank you. I'm so proud of you all and I love you guys.

Have fun and stay safe. See you all Monday!!!

Myrtle Creek Adventures.

Today is the day my son has been anticipating since the first of school. Today is the day I've been anxious about for the last few weeks. Today my son got to experience his very first school field trip.

In the beginning of the school year, my son made it very clear he wanted to go to the farm field trip that was being offered through his new school. While I wasn't exactly thrilled about driving an hour to Fallbrook, to hang out with a bunch of people I don't know, and put myself in a potentially awkward situation - since anxiety makes every situation seem worse than what is really is, I knew it would beneficial for my son to join other classmates and have fun. So I signed him up and the countdown ended today.

After having a rough night with my son's eczema, we made our way early this morning to the beautiful "farm" called, Myrtle Creek. I use the word "farm" loosely, as it was a nursery and botanical garden, with a few goats. Nonetheless, GORGEOUS place.

Once we arrived, we were greeted by the field trip coordinator for my sons charter/homeschool program. Then we were given a few minutes to briefly look around, while waiting for the rest of the group to show up. Believe me when I tell you, my sons eyes were the size of saucers when he saw how big and nature filled this place was. He's such an adventurer, it kills me how adorable it is when he gets to explore nature.

This nursery/farm had a gorgeous array of plants ranging from herbs to succulents and everything in between. Each and every corner you turned, you'd be greeted with a beautiful display of fairy gardens, shrubbery that's naturally taken shape there, and adorable water fountains. The staff was also incredibly kind and helpful. The amount of honorable love these people displayed for their job environment, was not only refreshing, but humbling, I wanted to but every single flower they had, because they weren't only breathtaking, but I wanted to support this nursery with every penny I had. Of course I didn't, but the heartfelt thought was truly there.

I also truly loved the amount of garden "furniture" they had available. Not only were they unique, but they had something for every type of garden. Personally I loved their wood and rock hearts, along with the excellently crafted bird houses. I was also incredibly close to purchasing one of their pepper plants, because I've always wanted to grow my own peppers. I decided against it though, seeing as how my space is currently limited and I don't want to ruin the magnificent plant.

A few minutes passed and it was time to formerly join up as a group and start the tour. Our guide for the day - Kim - was a very gentle man who had an astonishing knowledge of the land itself. I also thoroughly enjoyed how he told the stories, with such enthusiasm and a smile. Not to mention Bo the cat made a cute impression on the place, as he passed by the kids to be adored and petted.

The nursery/farm gave the kids all an opportunity to feed the three goats they had on the property. Every single kid was giggling and having a lot of fun. Mind you, this is a group of kids ranging from Kindergarten to maybe 5th grade. By the way, every single kid and parent in the group was kind and generous with everyone, including me. Which meant I had nothing to worry about. Take that's anxiety!

The kids all went to wash their hands and headed down to an absolutely gorgeous plantation house. I know, I know, I'm using the word "gorgeous", but you guys don't understand! Unfortunately my ecstatic-ness got the better of me and I forgot to take a picture of the house's outside - and also our lunch - but I added a photo from the Myrtle Creek Instagram page.

The plantation house was owned by the owners and it used to simply be their home. After their kids moved on and they realized it was much to big to be a two person home, they made a little adobe house further back on the property and turned this house into a spectacular "party" room. It's an older style house, with a wrap around porch. Trimmed with brown stained wood and covered in a creamy tan all over, you'll find that each side is filled with large windows, that allow you to clearly see the dreamy light glowing inside. Once inside, you're greeted with this old-timey staircase that leads up to their offices. Regardless of it's purpose, the upstairs has still been maintained as an "authentically antique" house. If you look directly up from the staircase, you'll see this giant skylight ceiling, with a breathtaking chandelier hanging with shrubbery all around it. The outside reminded of "To Kill A Mockingbird", while the upstairs reminded me of a garden oasis. The downstairs party room is a WHOLE other story.

They've created the left side as a dining area, covered with simple square tables. Each table is draped with a vintage style table cloth, stacked with neatly placed mix-matched chinaware. Every single piece of eatery in that room belonged in a china cabinet on display. The entire room gave off this very elegant dining hall, that you might find in a vintage New Orleans home. To be honest, I immediately thought of Nancy Drew. The classic look and the romantic oasis, makes it an amazing place to reserve for a special occasion - which you can. They even have a catering company that can serve you on your occasion. It isn't a HUGE party area, but perhaps a nice birthday party or a family reunion would suffice here. To be honest, I'd just want to dress
up and eat lunch there in the only bench window seat they have there. I'd read for hours while sipping tea and eating their DELICIOUS sandwiches.

We completed the plantation house tour and it was finally time for lunch, which they provided for us. We were given sandwiches with buttered bun filled with turkey, tomatoes, bacon, lettuce, and a sauce that I so wish I asked about. Everything tasted fresh - because it's organic from a local farm - and made me truly feel like I was living the good life. For the little ones, they had turkey and cheese sandwiches - since most kids don't like the "fancied up" version - but it's really up for anyone's picking. They also gave us lemonade and fresh berries - which we added into our lemonades for an added scrumptious factor - along with a couple other trail mix packs. We didn't eat or handle any of the trail mix, because of my son's severe allergy. I'll be honest, I was so hungry at this point I completely forgot to photograph our food. I have to say though, the presentation was impeccable as well as the quality. If you're thinking of visiting this place, don't worry, you don't have to be in a group to taste their good food. They have a cafe on sight that serves these mouthwatering meals.

With bellies full and energy restored, it was time for the last portion of our trip. Having the little ones create their very own fairy garden! I'll admit, I didn't exactly know what a fairy garden was until today and now I'm obsessed. They are so cute and adorably put together.

Each little one - and slightly big ones - was able to grab a pot (you could purchase a moss pot instead if you chose to, but the terracotta pots were included in our group package, which meant free for us), cover the whole with moss, add some dirt, pick 3 flowers of their choosing (you could also go with succulents for a more "water friendly" version, but again it wasn't included, so you'd have to purchase it), add a few rocks and decorative moss, and pick out one tiny animal or decoration piece (you can purchase additional tiny figures). My son went with a black or dark purple - we aren't exactly sure - flower, a very bright golden yellow flower, and a light purple flower. The combination is gorgeous I think. He also chose to use mostly rocks, but lightly spread moss about. His duck - the figure he chose - needed to be in a "small forest", so that's why he chose to add some moss.

The finished product turned out absolutely amazing and it's now sitting proudly on our window sill. We are going to try SO hard to keep these plants alive, because I know how much they mean to my son and I am so proud of him. I've also come to terms with the fact that they may not last forever, but when that happens we will deal with the situation and create a new one. For now though, we are going to enjoy what beauty he's created. All the kids made uniquely different fairy gardens, each with their very own distinct look.

The entire experience at Myrtle Creek was so freaking fun you guys. Their selection is awesome, their gift shop is adorable, their nursery farm is gorgeous, the staff is SO nice, and it's a promise that I will be returning with my little guy! We want to come back, eat a nice lunch here, pick out some new plants, and perhaps make another fairy garden - they're $20 originally. I 100% recommend that you check out this wonderful place. Oh! They also have a bird sanctuary, but they aren't really around much until the Winter time, because they get more food at the farm than anywhere else.

I even found myself a nice white rocking chair to sit in and enjoy the scenery.

If you're ever in Southern California, make your way to Myrtle Creek (website HERE) and check out their perfect plant land. Have a picnic, feed the goats, and watch the smiles widen on your kids' face!

My top 3 favorite Kindergarten products!!!

Being a homeschool household, I am constantly trying to figure out unique and fun ways to help teach my son normal Kindergarten standards, without having him sit down and textbook everything. Having such a wonderful educational facilitator (teacher), she's very intuitive and has helped me with suggestions and recommendations. After much research and deciding that my son is definitely a hands on learner, we found quite a few tools that we've found to be extremely beneficial to my son's learning experience. Granted we still have a few more items that have been ordered, but if they turn out to be just as amazing, I will do a part 2.

My son is a huge reader. He really enjoys creating his own storybooks and reading in general. His only problem is that he can't read. Well, after mentioning this to my son's teacher, she suggested using "Bob Books". These are a series of collection books, that help teach kids to read by using strategic short stories filled with
"sight words". My son knows how to sound out words no problem - i.e. cat, dog, pig, bed, etc. - but the sight words are his hurdle at this moment. Without knowing much about them, we decided to order the first collection called "Stage 1: Kindergarten Sight Words". The small box collection includes 10 short story books and 30 flashcards with sentences on them to help put the sight words into context. I will say that while I feel like they don't teach ALL of the sight words I'd like him to focus on, I figured out it's because this is only stage 1. However, they are an absolute favorite thing to use with my son. They are small enough for him to handle and light enough so that he can pack one in his backpack and practice reading while we drive. You can see his face light up when he finishes each book and his confidence level has truly risen. Within these 10 books, my son will learn 30 new sight words. Combining these books with some flashcards I found for $2 at Target, Dr. Seuss books, and I-Spy books, he's getting the hang of reading. The fact that we are just finishing our 1st month in school, I'm more than happy to have this type of progress and so is he!

My son is a also a huge science lover. Science in Kindergarten isn't really all that exciting for him, but it has to be taught nonetheless, to provide a foundation of fundamental skills when it comes to progression. He started to grasp this concept when he realized he had to learn the basis of a flower before asking how they spread and grow into huge fields. Now that he's become more accepting of the "simple science", I figured that adding some more hands-on science to his curriculum might benefit his learning experience. My son's teacher gave us a few science books filled with all sorts of experiments he could create, that would help teach him what he needs to know as well, but having an entire science kit would allow him to further his curiosity. I found this "Mind Blowing Science" box, that includes 11 experimental activities. With these experiments, he will put his knowledge of matter into use, but will also help him understand volcanoes, evaporation, and much more. For example, I was explaining to him how to identify gases, solids, and liquids. I was also teaching him that you turn a solid and a liquid, into a gas. While he somewhat understood, putting this information to use was his dream. We were able to use his new science kit and safely watch how citric acid, baking soda, and water create a gas - Carbon Dioxide. He then learned that this was the same gas we exhaled. Right there, he learned two different science facts about matter and the human body. We plan on doing on science experiment each week, on top of his "Bill Nye the Science Guy" episodes on Netflix - he loves that show - and creating stories about science facts - like how rain is created. I love this kit, because it allows kids to become the scientist they always wanted to be, without having to worry about an explosive deadly chemical compound. Also, it teaches them while they're having fun and that is amazing.

The last thing I'd like to brag about, is a very common workbook that I see so many people use all the time. My son LOVES to do workbooks, so long as they are fun, colorful, and easily accomplished by him. Don't get me wrong, he enjoys a challenge every now and then, but if he can't figure it out in the car or on the kitchen table within a few minutes, he's done. After hearing raved reviews about Brain Quest products, I took the plunge and ordered a Brain Quest Kindergarten workbook. I was a little iffy, seeing as how ABCmouse.com didn't do him any justice, but I thought I'd give it a shot. This book claims to have an entire years worth of curriculum, which is amazing. It helps teach how to write each letter - capital and lowercase, about communities, money, how to tell time, writing their numbers, counting, patterns, shapes, colors, phonics, spelling, vocabulary, sight words, sorting and matching, and of course basic science. It also includes simple games and a really cool clock made out of stock paper. I have my son do a page every day from each section. Some days we do a little more of a certain section, if that's the subject for the day. For example, today we wanted to do math, so we worked a little more with writing numbers, counting, adding, subtracting, and telling time. With these very easy worksheets - you can rip each page out and make copies if you have multiple kiddos you want to use this with, my son feels like he has his own big boy school book. The fact that it gives him confidence to continue with other lessons, write his stories, and talk about what he's learned, I am extremely pleased with this purchase. Also, they make it so easy for the kids to grasp each concept, that my son already understands how to tell the hour on a clock. That's after 1 day of working on it!

As you can see I absolutely love all three of these products for different reasons, but the big picture is how it's benefited my son's learning. I feel like when we use these in correlation to reading, exploring, creating, writing, talking, and learning shows, he really has a well rounded teaching experience. It gives him so many different ways to understand the subject at hand, without him feeling like he's bombarded with textbooks, curriculum, and perfection. After all, Kindergarten is about learning while doing. They need that play time, socializing - which he does get with his home school program, and that confidence that they CAN do this. With everything in hand, I think we got this Kindergarten year handled.

DIY Spa Day at Home!

We all need a day to ourselves every now and then. Some people get a coffee, go to a bookstore, sit down in one of their strategically placed chairs, and read until they forget where they're at. Some people never get out of bed, except for getting food and going to the bathroom. No matter what your heart desires, you NEED time to yourself.

I've briefly talked about the importance of unwinding in a prior blog post (see HERE), I decided that I would share with you all how I create a spa day at home for the nights when I really just need mommy time.

Being a single mom, I don't have time to myself. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, I just have to get creative when it comes to optimizing my "me" time. Also, I don't like spending unnecessary money on a spa trip to have someone else pamper me - although I know that some people prefer that and that's ok - so I've figured out how to pamper myself in the comfort of my own home and robe. While I don't think this exact "remedy" will please everyone - some like different scents - I do think the general idea would make anyone happy.

So in an attempt to simplify and optimize your "you" time, while giving you the greatest after affect, here are my must-haves when it comes to "mommy after dark".

Your body needs love too.

I love the idea of detoxifying my skin and balancing it's PH levels. With Epsom Salt, you can quickly turn a bath into a relaxing and purifying Jacuzzi. Personally I enjoy Lavender scented Epsom Salt, but they come in a variety of smells. I purchased a big bag at Target for less than $4 and I couldn't be happier. Not only does this bag serve a huge purpose for bath time, but you can also use it for soaking your feet after a long day of walking AND add it to your body wash to create a body scrub. For a wonderful soak, simply add some to your bath, wait a few minutes for the salts to spread throughout the water, and enjoy for at least 20 minutes. Your skin will thank you and so will your mind. No soap necessary for soaking in the salts.

While your soaking, try to ease your mind with a scented - or non-scented for the sensitive mermaids - candle, instead of the harsh bathroom light. This will allow you to create a much more calming atmosphere. You can also play some soothing music - I always go for Frank Sinatra or Bing Crosby, to help drift away from your racing mind. If you prefer to keep things on the quieter side, you can always keep the light on and pull out a nice read. I tend to use my bath time to read Nancy Drew, if I'm not already in the company of Frank or Bing.

For a wonderfully easy time scrubbing away the day's stress while showering - and bathing - opt-in for a handled bristle body wash scrubbing brush. I found mine at Target as well, for under $4 again. It's amazing, because not only does the handle allow me to get the hard to reach places on my back, but the top portion detaches to become a hand scrubber. To use body wash and Epsom salt with this brush, simply pour your body wash on the bristles, add a few salts, sprinkle some water, and start scrubbing!

While your body is the biggest stress keeper, a facial is a huge must for an at-home spa day.

All of these products can be found at Target with ease. First I use a face mask for under $2. My most recent favorite has been the deep cleansing packet from the brand Que Bella. Another favorite of mine from this brand is their mud mask line. Seriously, check them out. They have all sorts of masks to soothe your face from a day of face paint.

I don't ALWAYS use a face mask, so when I decide to just do a simple face wash with added scrub, I go with my Apricot Scrub by Up & Up (check out my review about it HERE). This is the "off brand" of the St. Ives Apricot Scrub, but it's cheaper and does just as good a job.

Once I've cleared off most of the gunk, I go in with a charcoal pore strip from Biore. These run about $6 for 6 strips. I'm not particularly happy with the price, but for the amount of crap they get out, they'll suffice. I will say that I didn't notice a difference between these and the original pore strips, but I was glad to see they at least worked.

To finish off my facial, I apply a nice thick-ish moisturizer to replenish and hydrate my skin. Now, I have mildly oily skin, but regardless it's very important to keep it moisturized. Without moisturizer, my skin can become a little too dry and agitated from the other facial products. Especially after a face mask or an apricot scrub. I know that both of the products I've discussed are labelled as "moisturizing", but trust me when I say it's not enough. Seeing as how Fall is slowly creeping in day by day, the cold will dry out my face even quicker, making my moisturizer and even bigger need. I always choose to go with Pond's face cream, because it's not too thick or to light. It can add a little too much oil to my skin, but I choose to use it at night only. Since I wash my face in the morning, the lotion never affects my makeup during the day.

Once you've purified your body, re-balanced your PH levels, cleared your face of any disgusting gunk, and scrubbed away the dead skin cells, you're probably exhausted and ready to hop into bed. You will have calmed your mind and gone into a relaxation mode, meaning that bedtime is necessary. Sometimes though, you just want a little extra something to put your mind at ultimate ease. Try aromatherapy.

Some people choose oils and some people choose lotions. I am a lotion person. I feel like oil just makes me feel greasy, while lotion makes me feel soft and smooth. Just my own personal opinion.

Recently I got a coupon from Bath and Body Works, to purchase an item for 20% off, plus receive a free candle with any purchase. After browsing all the aisles and not really needing one of their typical lotions - because I own way too many to start with - I decided to test out their aromatherapy line. I am in love!

I was trying to decided between their Eucalyptus Tea scent and their Eucalyptus Spearmint. There was something about their Eucalyptus Tea Stress Relief lotion that spoke to me. I felt better with the first scent. So I scooped it up and now it's my nighttime lotion right before bed. I use it almost every night, especially after a night of spa-ing. It moisturizes my legs and body after being scrubbed, shaved, and detoxified, it smells amazing, and it calms my racing mind. I completely recommend you trying it out! Whether you prefer a candle, a body wash, or a lotion, go smell Bath and Body Works' line of aromatherapy and see for yourself.

Sometimes when I want a warm drink to make me feel cuddly on the inside, I'll opt in for one of my teas (read all about them HERE) to end the night.

After everything, I end up calm, collected, less stress, clean, and ready to finally slumber in peace. I know this isn't an instant insomnia killer, but it's definitely an amazing mini-spa for anyone looking to have "me time". Speaking of "me time", my little one is finally asleep and I think I'll have myself a spa day. With all the stress from today, I need a spa day. So off to the bathroom I go, for a spa day uniquely my own!

Have a wonderful night beautiful mermaids and don't forget to treat yourself! You deserve it.

Presidential Debate, Nachos, and Gummy Bears.

It is so...freaking...hot. I know I probably sound like a whiny blogger since I live in San Diego and haven't experienced 100+ degree on a daily basis, but trust me when I say this is not cool!

I woke up this morning, turned on the TV, and realized that this heat wave was here to stay for a few days. Yay us...

All day my son and I have been wetting our shirts, blasting every fan on us, staying in the shade, and trying to not sweat of our skin. With popsicles in hand, my son and I were trying to decide what we were going to make for today's dinner. With the presidential debate taking place today, we decided to go with some nachos after my mother mentioned she was making some. j

We weren't exactly interested in driving anywhere - although the car's A/C would've been nice - so we just walked nearby to pick up some ingredients. Nothing specifically fancy, but it was extremely easy to make. With some chili, mission cheese sauce, lime chips, and avocados, you'll have a plate of deliciousness in no time. We decided on two different types of chili, due to my son and I's
different taste in beans. Really my son just wanted his very own chili and they were on sale. Either way, I didn't mind.

We also chose to finish off dinner with our favorite mini-dessert. Gummy bears! But not just regular gummy bears, 12 flavored gummy bears. They are so freaking amazing you guys. We get our from Smart and Final in bulk, but you can find them almost anywhere that sells bulk snacks. You know those giant buckets found at Sprouts/Henry's? Those.

Once we got home and downed a crap ton of Gatorade's - because you know, dehydration - we made our nachos and sat down for what we considered social studies. Seeing as how this is a historic moment, we decided to discuss presidency, why we have one, who are current president is, some of the important presidents we have, and why it's important to vote. That's homeschooling for you, taking any type of situation and turning it into a learning experience.

Also, I have to give credit to my mom. She recommended buying the lime chips and said they go great with the chili. She was absolutely right! You have to try it. The hint of lime on the chips gives the entire nacho plate a slight tangy/sour flavor and I am in love. Even my son - who loves lime chips already - was impressed. He gave it a tiny thumbs up with his gorgeous smile.

I'm not going to discuss my political preferences, because I don't want a debate, but I will say that this has been a very informative 1st debate. While the debate didn't sway my opinion one way or the other, I will say that it was really good to see both candidates together without the whole "he said, she said" crap.

When the debate ended, my son gladly accepted a shower and bed. This heat has been literally draining us. Hopefully it won't be too harsh on Thursday. My son and I are heading to his first school field trip to a really cool farm. I don't necessarily want to roast in the heat, but we are excited - and hopeful - nonetheless.

I gotta say guys, I'm really loving the whole homeschooling situation. It is a little challenging at times trying to find the best way to teach a 5 year old, but it's pretty cool when you have a very verbal child. He expresses his interests clearly and will let me know instantly if he gets something or doesn't. These hot days aren't exactly helping us focus, but luckily we used the weather to do science and the debate for social studies. Needless to say, it's really cool.

I think homeschooling has also given me a new perspective on life, because I've started to really awaken to what can be taught. Learning opportunities are all around us, we just have to pay attention. My son has shown so much interest in learning about everything and sometimes I wonder who learns more, me or him.

Luckily the sun has fallen - although the dry heat is still very present - and now I get to shower and rest with my little one, who is currently spread out on a damp bed in front of the fan. Living the good life.

Hopefully you guys have had a good day and a good weekend! What did you guys think of the debate? Did it make you change your mind or are you more convinced in your candidate's abilities to be a president? Let me know in the comments down below!

A to Z Food Challenge: V

I absolutely, wholeheartedly, am obsessed with vanilla. Don't get me wrong, I am a chocolate girl as well - chocolate cake, fudge, chocolate chip cookies, chocolate bars, you name is - but for me Vanilla is almost always my go to. Mostly because it goes with almost any other dessert. Fruit, chocolate, caramel, hot cocoa, everything.

Seeing as how there are SO many things you could do with vanilla and vanilla flavored items, I thought I'd make a complete list of my favorite edibles to add Vanilla too! That way you don't just get one simple vanilla recipe, but all sorts of deliciousness! I'll also let you guys know my favorite vanilla desserts for when you're out and about at restaurants.

1. Coffee
This one is my personal favorite for the mornings. When you add vanilla ice cream, it's almost like an ice cream coffee, and if you add chocolate syrup as well, you'll create a mocha-like drink at home. Adding vanilla extract into any ground coffee when being brewed (through french press, machine, etc.) will give you an instant "french roast" style brew!

2. Tea
I always, always, ALWAYS, add creamer to my tea. Trader Joe's has a vanilla creamer that I'm absolutely in love with (check out my post HERE to read all about it and my tea collection). The thing about adding vanilla creamer to tea - or even vanilla extract - is that it creates a "creamier" taste that also enhances the flavors of the tea itself. It also adds a mild sweet factor, without having to add so much sugar.

3. Batter
This is an obvious one, but sometimes people aren't always aware. I personally add vanilla extract to all of my cake, muffin, and cookie batters. Again, this enhances the flavor for me. I tend to always get compliments on my desserts when I add vanilla, compared to when I don't.

4. Smoothies
I did an entire post on how I create absolutely amazing smoothies using vanilla. I either use vanilla yogurt or vanilla ice cream, to use as a base. The fruit, spinach, and nuts get a sweet and creamy flavor explosion with either the yogurt or vanilla. You can check out my favorite smoothie secrets HERE.

5. Fruit and nut medley
This one is mostly for breakfast, but also makes a magnificent snack. I love cutting up some fruit, sprinkling some chia seeds, adding sliced almonds, and topping everything off with a nice dollop of vanilla yogurt. This is extremely healthy and is my sons favorite snack as well. You can choose to go with almost any fruit you desire - bananas, papaya, cantaloupe - and easily "fancy" it up for a quick and healthy dish.

BONUS: Stove top potpourri
This isn't an edible - hence the "bonus" part - but I felt like it was a really cool trick to include. Whenever the holiday seasons start to approach, I absolutely love filling my house with the aroma of vanilla, cranberries, orange, and/or cinnamon. Sometimes all four or a combination of 2 - 3. To create this wonderful aroma without spraying scents all over the house, I simply bring a pot of water to a boil, with the ingredients listed above. Someday's I choose for Cinnamon and Vanilla, while other days I go for Vanilla, Cranberry, and Orange. The smell is intoxicating and completely natural without chemicals from sprays - not that there is anything wrong with your house sprays, my son just can't handle them. Since Fall has officially arrived, I figured this would add a festive feel into your home.

And there you have it guys. I know it's a simple and quick food challenge today, but I really wanted to share these tips with you. I've had a few friends who never thought to add Vanilla into some of these things and since they realized they were missing out - after trying these tips and falling in love - I knew I couldn't hold out on all of you!

Happy Friday guys and have an absolutely wonderful weekend! It's the first weekend in Fall so be sure to go out and enjoy yourselves. Just be sure that you stay safe as well! If you plan on jumping in a pile of leaves, please do so in a safe manner - i.e. make sure there isn't a stump underneath that pile. I love you all and I hope whatever you do this weekend creates a wonderful memory! See you all Monday!!!

Thrift Store Fall Fashion 2016.

It's official! We are now experiencing the Fall season. For some that means putting away all the shorts, tank tops, and flip flops, busting out the orange leaved decor for every single nook and cranny of your house, and rushing out to buy everything pumpkin flavored. For me, it means that I get to wear warmer clothes (sometimes), I can walk around in my boots without being the oddball out (not that it bothered me anyway), and I have an excuse to constantly have apple cider in my house (because it starts to go on clearance more often at my grocery store). Plus the food is always more festive, the towns become a little more giddy with the major holidays peaking around the corner, and everyone starts to get cuddly.

PS, please don't go around hugging strangers. Some of them don't like that.

Since Fall in the fashion world can get a little expensive - what with the knee high boots, more layers, expensive jackets, and bold statement jewelry - I thought I'd give you guys a glimpse into what I wear for the Fall, using thrifted items. Now, some of these aren't directly from thrift stores, but they were on "last chance clearance", making them the same price as the thrift stores themselves.

Don't get me wrong, Summer and Spring can put a damper on your wallet as well, but to me Fall and Winter are the more expensive seasons for looking your best. More layers equals more money right? So without further ado, here are 5 Fall outfits that are completely affordable and re-creatable!

My first outfit includes the infamous army green jacket. This is has been a huge love in the fashion world lately - to be honest, I feel like it's been "in style" for years - but it can come at a hefty price. Recently I paid a trip to Target, where I found a very similar jacket for around $40. To me that's just too much. Instead, I checked out my local Ross where I found my green jacket for only $6! It's a very light and soft fabric, making it perfect for layering in San Diego weather, without sacrificing any style at all. The t-shirt is just a plain white T-shirt I found at Goodwill for $4, which you can find at almost any store. The jeans are "Lucky Brand" jeans that were in a dark wash, in mint condition, found at Goodwill. Absolutely no wear or tear on them! They are a tad bit long, but that's how almost all my jeans are since I'm on the shorter side. Instead of paying retail price of anywhere from $70 to $130, I picked these up for a mere $14! My boots (mentioned in yesterday's blog post) were a sale find from last year's "after season sale" at Forever 21, which led me to purchase them for only $12 instead of full price ($40). Goodwill is literally PACKED with boots exactly like these, with amazing prices as well. I saw some really cute brown ankle boots for $6. I didn't purchase them sadly, because they were a size too big. This entire outfit (minus the purse which I did a review on HERE) only cost me $36 and everything can easily be re-used and combined with other items, for an entirely new look!

My second outfit is very simple. A pair of black leggings (mine were $4, but you can find them almost anywhere for cheap), a 3/4th sleeve graphic t-shirt from Goodwill that only cost $4, a Hollister jean vest from Goodwill that cost me $6, and white converse (which I paid $8 for from Goodwill and cleaned up - click HERE to see how I made them white again) This look isn't just simple, but can be altered to your own unique style. Any shoe with simple leggings and a jean vest, are nicely complimented by a stylish t-shirt. Stripes, polka dots, graphic design, even plain would look good! I love this look, because not only is it easy to re-create, but it's so comfortable! If you don't like leggings, a black maxi skirt or fall colored Jean would work as well! This entire outfit cost only $22 and again, everything is reusable.

My third outfit is definitely the most colorful one of them all. This outfit includes mustard yellow jeans from Ross, that I purchased two winters ago - during off season when they were on clearance - for around $6!!! I remember being so absolutely stocked to wear these and now that's it's fall, I can FINALLY enjoy them again! Personally I think everyone should own at least one pair of bright or patterned jeans. They just make such a bold statement. In my opinion. I decided to pair these pants with my plain white t-shirt from outfit one ($4 from Goodwill) and my dusty rose/salmon Scotch House cashmere cardigan from Goodwill, that only put me out $10! This sweater/cardigan is by far one of my absolute favorite finds from Goodwill. It's soft, cozy, cuddly, and such a gorgeous color. For shoes I simply used my converse ($8 from Goodwill). Now this outfit would look nicely with booties, knee-high boots, tennis shoes, or even simple heels. For a total price of $28, I'll be looking quite festive in my opinion. Side note: another thing I love about fall and winter is that I get to dress festively.

My fourth outfit is a little more casual, but it certainly is awesome! Now the boots aren't exactly thrift store or clearance - they were a Christmas gift from my mom a few years ago - but you can literally find any pair of boots relatively cheap to match this outfit. At Ross for example, they have quite a few boots in stores now and Goodwill as well is starting to stock pile of boots. I've seen so many cute ones, but have refrained from purchasing them, seeing as how I already have my true loves. As for everything else, it's all thrifted. First off is a pair of American Eagle jeans that fit perfectly, which I found at Goodwill for $1! I can't tell you how giddy I left when I bought these jeans. My top is a J.Crew top, also thrifted at Goodwill, for only $1 as well! The things you find for $1 just amaze me. To me this is such an easy going outfit. With a simple t-shirt with a pretty design - mine had a lace pattern on it - and a really nice pair of jeans in a dark wash, you can look beyond presentable when doing errands. It's a little "mom" for some, but to me it's gorgeous. This can also be paired with a nice simple heel for an even more elegant look. With a budget of lets say $10 on your shoes, you could adjust this outfit to costing around $12! I mean seriously, $2 for a shirt and pair of pants...why AREN'T you checking out Goodwill?!

My fifth and final outfit, is a more "night out" type of deal. It's also another favorite of mine, because you can easily make it a daytime outfit for going out to lunch or a date night outfit - I'm living the "forever single" life, so this outfit is really my "special occasion" and "let's look cute today" outfit. I found this absolutely adorable t-shirt style dress from Ross for $4. This type of "casual-ish" dress seems to be really popular right now, coming in a variety of colors and styles. To make this a very simple date night outfit, I paired the dress with some very cute black "open sided" ankle booties that I found at Goodwill for only $7. They are a chunky heel, which I feel like can also be used for casual or date night outfits. To make this a little more daytime casual, I tend to pair it with the jean vest I mentioned prior (from Goodwill for $6). With the vest the outfit totals to $17, but without the vest you're looking at $11.

The important thing when it comes to fashion - at least in my opinion - is having pieces that can be easily mixed and matched with each other. This was something that I found to be difficult when I first started building my wardrobe post-pregnancy, but eventually I learned that as long as I can visualize something being used in more than one outfit, it's worth being bought. Of course there are items that we just fall in love with, regardless if they are outfit specified or not, and that's ok. It's about expressing yourself, even if sometimes you just want to send off the message of "I really don't care today". To be honest, that's the message I give off quite often with my wardrobe when I'm doing errands. Sometimes a momma just wants to get shit done and get the heck home. Am I right?!

As you can see by the outfits I chose for today's blog post, everything can be switched around. I plan on doing a future post about "traveling light", where I'll further explain how to use minimal items for maximum style. While I don't think I'm necessarily this huge fashionista, I do think that being a single mom with hardly anytime to really think about dressing nice, is relate-able. Some people don't want to spend hours - nor have that kind of time - deciding on what to wear and how to look presentable. That's what this is all about! I got you.

Also, I've used my purse with every single one of these outfits - because I don't have the funds to be purchasing a purse to match every outfit, nor do I really want to be switching things all the time - and it's looked fabulous with everything. I freaking love that purse, you have no idea. (click HERE for the full scoop on my purse)

Hopefully these outfits have inspired you to not only play around with simple everyday wardrobe pieces this Fall, but to check out your local thrift stores! You never know what amazing pieces you'll find for so incredibly cheap. Also Ross seems to be a really great alternative if you don't like thrifting. Granted you wont find unique pieces or $1 items, but you never know!

Why You Should Always Shop Off Season.

Tomorrow is the first day of Fall, which means it's getting close to Halloween, leaves start changing, cuddle weather starts to creep in day by day, and sales hit the stores like an airborne virus. Why is this important? Because it's important that you shop for anything summer related NOW! Are your kids 5T now? Buy 6T swimsuits. Loved that giant pizza pool toy? Snatch it up?

Summer ending doesn't just meant summer items are on clearance, it's just the main event. Really there are SO many things that go on sale, you'd be insane to not check them out! In case your wondering what I'm exactly referring to, I've created a list on what you should buy right now for a super clearance!

1. School supplies
Your munchkins - and maybe even you yourself - will be in school next year. You'll probably need paper, pens, pencils, notebooks, etc. Heck, you might even need extra now. Well places like Target and Walmart want to clear out all their school supplies, seeing as how the munchkins have made their way into class already. Literally as soon as school starts, the big stores want to make room for the next big thing. For a few examples, you can check out my back to school haul for my Padawan HERE and how I spent less than $20 on everything!

2. (Holiday) Decorations
You know those Luau parties you love to throw? Well guess what, all that party stuff is on super clearance right now. Pick up anything and everything you'd want to use for next years Luau and stow it away until the time is right. Not only will you save a bundle, but you can have the very first Luau Summer Bash of the year, before anyone else does. This statement holds true for all holidays/seasons really. I frequently purchase my decorations after the holidays and seasons, which means I pay between 75% off to 90% on all my decorations. Do you think anyone knows? Nope? They just think I spent a fortune on decorating my humble abode. This is also, true with regular home decor. Most stores will put their chairs, rugs, sheets, pictures, etc. on clearance, to make room for new seasonal decor.

3. Summer clothes
This is really pertains to all the "end of season" clothes. Yes I know what's in style now may not be the trend next year, but you don't necessarily have to go for big state, net pieces all the time. A couple wardrobe items are timeless. Shorts, tank tops, t-shirts, all of these go on clearance to make way for Fall clothes. I do this every single year - IF I buy anything at all. I, however, tend to do my shopping at Goodwill, because their sales are amazing. They too want to clear the racks of "out of season" items. I found a pair of black boots from Forever 21 last Winter, since they were more of a "Fall" look. Instead of paying $40, I only paid $12. This year it's a very common trend and I paid a fraction of the cost most people are paying now. I also just purchased a pair of sandals one size bigger than what my son is wearing now, for $25. They were crazy expensive beginning of summer and now he's got brand new, slip resistant, super comfy, water and land sandals for next summer.

4. Entertainment
You know all those new movies and games that came out over the summer on DVD? Yeah well Fall is going to bring a whole bunch of new movies and games, so where's the space going to come from? You got it! From throwing those bad boys into a bin and letting you go crazy! Although not every movie or game will be bumping cartridges, but they will be put in a rack in a clearance section. TV's also tend to fall into this category and can be bought for a heck of a good deal. Board games and toys will also be added to the clearance are as well for the little ones.

5. Furniture
This goes with the concept of home decor. Most places have a set schedule on what type of furniture sells the most during which season, therefore ordering more for that season. The thing is, when they still have an abundance - or even a few - items left from the prior season, they tend to want to clearance everything out. This gives you the opportunity to snatch up anything from bathroom accessories to a bed frame. I myself just purchased a new bed frame/foundation, for $100. It's a metal bed foundation that you put together - I don't like wood, it has a zippered cloth cover around it for the appearance of a real foundation, AND it has [optional] plastic legs that can lift the entire set up off the ground! It was on sale, because it wasn't an item specified for Fall, therefore taking up valuable space for new items and beds. Score one for this momma! (PS I will do a full review on this frame after a few nights of using it).

When it comes to shopping, the most important thing is just being aware of when the good stuff goes on sale. Target for example, has specified days for what goes on sale (some days are clothes, some days are makeup, etc), but they also do holiday clear outs.

Two added tips, don't wait too late or you'll be out of luck and don't wait until directly after Fall for the popular items (TV's, Game Consoles, Video Games) because they will be hiked up for Christmas shopping. I know the after thanksgiving sale (Black Friday) can have great deals, but sometimes they aren't as great as you'd expect. Sta
rt noticing how much things cost now and compare them during Black Friday ads. After Christmas and New Years is when the good stuff goes on real sale. So many people return things or stores over stock.

Regardless have fun and remember, if it's full price, you probably don't need it.

Snack Time With a 5 Year Old: 3 Snacks to Give Your Kids!

My son has usually healthy taste buds. He tends to gravitate towards carrots, broccoli, cheese, and yogurt, but his preferred snacks aren't the conventional ones you and I would think to make. Seeing as how kids love to snack and eat all day (at least mine does every hour or so), I thought I'd share with you all the top 3 snacks my 5 year asks for specifically. Granted some aren't exactly "crazy creative", but perhaps you'd be interested in quick and easy snacks for your padawans to munch on.

1. Bruschetta Pizza Bread
Trader Joe's has this Bruschetta "spread" for only $2.49. It's a thicker tomato like consistency, that mimics pizza sauce perfectly. My son LOVES pizza, so I decided instead of purchasing regular Trader Joe's pizzas (we still buy the Bambinos mini pizzas every now and then), I'd let him make his very own. First we pick a bread he'd prefer - in the pic he chose sourdough for the day, then he gets to spread his sauce on the bread. Then with the cheese of his choice, he sprinkles some goodness and toast (or not) the entire thing. Some days he will choose to go full blown cheese attack, while other days he will simply enjoy a nice piece of bread and spread. Not only is this quick and easy, but it's inexpensive and allows the kiddos to create their own deliciousness. Perhaps your padawans aren't as "chef enthusiastic" like mine, but if they are, they're sure to enjoy this mini creation. You can even add pepperoni/salami slices for a pepperoni pizza!

2. Pirate's Booty and Apple Slices
This one is pretty self explanatory when it comes to the apple slices (he loves Pink Lady's and Fuji, which I often buy from Trader Joe's), but some of you may be wondering what "Pirate's Booty" is. It's simply baked rice and corn puffs in the flavor 'Aged White Cheddar'. They have other flavors, but his favorite is white cheddar. I purchased the big bag of "Pirate's Booty" at Costco for under $5 (on sale, but I believe regular price is under $6), which was awesome because not only is it in bulk size, but it's resealable. They can be found at a,most any grocery store and are absolutely delicious. Not to mention, much healthier than regular Cheetos puffs. He tends to always drink this snack with water, which is why I included his water bottle. This literally takes a few minutes to cut the apple and pour the puffs. How awesome is that! It's also perfect for on-the-go.

3. Edamame with Salt and Rice Milk
This is my son's number one favorite snack. He also loves this as a side dish for meals. His only request is that it has to have a little salt. I only sprinkle a very tiny amount and I only use Himalayan Pink Salt (found at Trader Joe's). It's a much healthier salt that has just as good of flavor as regular. In fact, I think it tastes slightly better. That's just my opinion though. My son will devour an entire bag if I let him. Not only does it taste good, but it is loaded with protein! At only $1.99 a bag at Trader Joe's you can't beat the it! To drink, he more often than not chooses rice milk (lactose intolerant and doesn't like almond or soy, found at Trader Joe's), because it's mildly sweet with its Vanilla flavor. Trader Joe's also sells edamame outside the shell, which makes for a perfect on-the-go snack as well after cooking for roughly 5 minutes!

As you can see my little guy can be quite specific when it comes to snack time. Personally, I think that all of these would be excellent add-ons to your already pre-planned snacks. Besides, who couldn't use more healthy food ideas for the little ones? Hopefully this has given you inspiration for the mini food critique in your home. Now if you'll excuse me, someones asking for rice milk and a story before we brush his teeth and rest our heads. Duty calls!
