The Lego Batman Movie: Review and First Impression!

Happy Monday everyone! I hope your weekend has been filled with fun and decadent eats. 

This past Saturday my padawan and I were taken to the movies by my mom and stepdad, to see The Lego Batman Movie! It was a highly anticipated film for my mini me and I was intrigued to see if it would be the same scripted quality as the original Lego Movie. 

For those of you pondering my thoughts on the Lego Movie, it wasn't necessarily my cup of tea and it didn't really keep my son's attention, but it wasn't a horrible flop like many cartoon movies can be. 

My stepdad and mom took us to the first matinee on Saturday and kindly supplied the drinks and popcorn. We arrived just in time, found prime seating in the comfortable movie theater, and plopped down ready to [hopefully] be given a few laughs for the next 2 hours and 9 mins. 

SIDE NOTE: I will not be including any spoilers. 

The entire movie was based around - you guessed it - Lego Batman. The plot surrounds around Batman and his inability to face his one true fear in life, despite him saying otherwise. He struggles with the idea of ever having a family, while still needing to maintain his persona as the superhero Gotham City has always known. 

After Joker decides to play the main bad guy - typical, but not predictable per se - Batman has to right his wrongs and ban together with the least likely of characters, to save Gotham City and the ones he's grown "fond" of. 

The story also gives you a little insight into the background of Robin and how he came into Batman's life. It does allow you to gain a character bond with Robin, but it is called the "Batman Movie", so the story isn't completely surrounding him.

In the end you're not given any sort of cliffhanger as a potential opening for a possible future film, but with Lego having an infamous amount of plausible stories using any number of superhero's - or Lego characters - they have created, it's not outrageous to say that another film similar to this style could be made in the future. 

There is a Lego Ninjago Movie coming out this year, but it doesn't seem to be of similar style. More so on the "action" and "serious" side, as opposed to this style which is "comical" and "silly". 

My padawan was hooked throughout the whole movie and we were able to get quite a few belly laughs in. I wasn't captivated like I have been with say "The Secret Life of Pets" or "Moana", but the movie itself was a laid back kids-comedy. 

I don't really recommend this film as an adult movie to watch, have a good time, and get a few laughs, but I do recommend it as a kids movie. However, that being said, I don't think it's worth going to the theaters for. While it was funny, it's more of a "Redbox Rental" than a "Movie Theater Ticket" type of film. Although, it may be harder to keep the kiddos intrigued in the film at home. 

I don't regret going to the theaters at all - I had a great time in fact - I just don't recommend paying a hefty price for this movie ticket. If your theater has a movie deal or you have a coupon, I'd use them. 

Out of 5 stars, I give it a 3. Very similar in style to the original Lego Movie, but not completely a flop either. My padawan did enjoy the film and that is all that matters!
